Event Rules

The participant undertakes to comply in full with the rules that apply to the cycling competition, and are published e.g. on the website grefillinn.is, as well as following all other instructions that employees and/or organizers may give in connection with the cycling competition;

  • The organizer of the competition reserves the right to decide unilaterally to remove a participant from the competition if he / she does not follow its rules or the instructions of the staff or organizers;
  • Photography is allowed in the competition and photos, videos or other material taken by the participant may be used in connection with the presentation of future competitions;
  • The results of the competition will be published in a public forum and will include the name of the participant, nationality, age and time of the competition
  • You are responsible for you. Event sponsors, organizers, promoters, staff, and volunteers are not responsible for your well being.
  • Participants must have reached the minimum age of 18 when signing up for the event.
  • Grefillinn is a self-supported gravel race. Support crews are not allowed to provide assistance of any kind to any rider while actively participating in the event. A Support crew’s only allowed role is to pick up a rider who has already abandoned the event. Therefore, Support Crews are NOT allowed on or near the course, unless it is to retrieve a rider who has abandoned their ride. Support Crews found on or near the course will have their rider disqualified from the event. 
  • Participants may support each other with sharing of food, tools, equipment, and knowledge. 
  • Leave no trace. Be responsible for your belongings. It is prohibited to leave trash on the trail. Anyone seeing dropping litter on the route at any place will be disqualified. 
  • Participants will be responsible for printing their own set of course maps and/or cue sheets, or downloading the course GPS file prior to the event. These assets will be the rider’s primary means of navigation. In addition, the course may have a limited number of course markings to reassure participants they are on route. DO NOT RELY ON COURSE MARKINGS FOR NAVIGATION. USE THE MAP, CUE SHEETS AND/OR GPS FILE.
  • The primary route must be followed at all times. No short cuts or alternate routes are permitted. By not following the primary route participants are automatically disqualified. The course may be altered by the promoters in the event of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstance. Should this occur, participants will be sufficiently advised.
  • If you intentionally exit the course for food, supplies, or any other reason, you must re-enter the course at the same spot at which you left. If you get lost, you shall make every reasonable attempt to backtrack to the point where you left the course; or to re-enter the course as soon as possible and without gaining an advantage.
  • Bicycles must be equipped with two (front and rear) fully-functional hand operated brakes.
  • E-bikes are not permitted.
  • Participants must wear a properly approved helmet while on their bicycle.
  • Participants must obey all laws and “Rules of the Road”. 
  • All roads are open to public traffic. For your safety, it is imperative that you be fully aware of your surroundings at all times. Therefore, headphones/earbuds are strictly forbidden.
  • Challenges to event results must come from a registered participant, must be made either in-person, or via email to [email protected] and must be received no later than 1 hour after arriving at the finish line. Race Directors have the final determination on protests.
  • Participants must bring following items:
    • GPS device with the course preloaded.
    • Cell phone in dry pouch.
    • 1.5 liters of water minimum.
    • Spare tube/s, lube, mini-tool and pump.
    • 500 calories in high energy food
    • Race number and time chip securely fixed to the bike.
  • Participant who abandons the race must inform race management as soon as possible of DNF.
  • Cut-offs must be met within given time frame. Participants who do not arrive at each given cut-off point in time will be disqualified.
  • The organizer of the competition reserves the right to cancel the event due to weather or other unforeseen circumstance that might put participants in danger during the race.
